The Issue

TLDR: We are calling on all social media platforms to clearly label AI generated content and allow users the choice of not seeing it. This is NOT a ban, it is a request for control over our media consumption to allow all social media users clarity over what is or is not real and the option to opt out of participating in the spread of Generative AI content.

-

The rapid evolution of generative AI technology has fundamentally altered our online experience, obfuscating the line between genuine human-generated content and machine-created material. As AI becomes increasingly woven into the fabric of social media, it becomes ever more challenging to distinguish authentic interactions, news stories, memes, and advertisements from those crafted by algorithms.

This blurring of authenticity is not just a minor inconvenience. It has significant repercussions on our society. The difficulty in differentiating between real and AI-generated content greatly undermines public trust. Humorous memes and serious journalistic pieces are equally vulnerable to being misinterpreted, leading to widespread misinformation. This technological opacity threatens the foundation of civil discourse and hampers the effective dissemination of information crucial to the public's decision-making process.

Our demand is straightforward: we call upon all social media platforms to implement clear labeling of AI-generated content. This labeling should extend to all forms of posts, advertisements, recommended content, and any other features within these platforms. Furthermore, users must be granted the ability to toggle AI-generated content according to their preferences, offering them the choice to pause or filter out these digital interferences entirely.

This would not be overwhelmingly difficult to implement. Pinterest is already doing something like this, websites and apps already exist to dynamically detect AI content, and the moderation systems required already exist for other unwanted content on all social media platforms.

A commitment to transparency will empower users to navigate social media with a renewed sense of trust and understanding. Platforms must do their part to preserve the integrity of online interactions and ensure that users have access to clear, accurate, and honest representations of content.

Sign this petition to urge social media companies to prioritize transparency and restore trust in digital interactions. Together, we can safeguard the integrity of information and promote a more informed society.
