Require all school buses to have live feed access for parents
The Issue
No parent should ever have to feel helpless in ensuring their child's safety and well-being while they are on a school bus. My son was terrified to get back on the bus after experiencing distressing situations. He described instances where teachers grabbed him, picked on him, and singled him out. Despite reaching out to the school board and the bus company, I was met with dismissive responses, suggesting I was lying about my son's experiences due to the driver's long service record. In desperation, I instructed my son to carry his phone to record these interactions. However, the bus driver confiscated his phone, leaving me with no way to verify what was happening.
The safety and welfare of our children should be a top priority. By implementing live-feed cameras on all school buses, we can ensure that parents have real-time access to what's happening during their child's commute. We can insure that the events that transpired in Wisconsin NEVER happen again. This measure will not only provide parents with peace of mind but also serve as a deterrent to any form of misconduct. Incidents like the ones my son faced could either be immediately addressed or prevented altogether.
Statistics show that bullying and misconduct on school transportation is a widespread issue. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 79% of public schools recorded one or more incidents of violence, theft, or other crimes during the 2017-2018 school year. Implementing live feed cameras could potentially reduce these numbers significantly by holding both students and staff accountable.
Furthermore, live feeds could enhance the overall security by allowing immediate response to any emergencies or incidents that may arise. This proactive step will ensure children are in a safe environment from the moment they step onto the bus until they return home.
The technology already exists, and it is feasible to integrate it into our school transportation systems. Many schools currently use cameras on school premises; extending this to buses is a logical next step.
