The Issue

The extension of Paseo De Este in El Paso, Texas, in 2023 was an essential development for enhanced connectivity, but it has also brought some unintended consequences. Since its expansion, there is now a one-mile stretch between Darrington Road and Horizon Mesa without any stops, leading to cars speeding excessively through the intersection at Paseo De Suerte. This poses a significant danger to the community, especially given the proximity of Sue Shook Elementary, situated between Darrington and Paseo De Suerte.

The safety of our community and children is paramount. Without proper traffic control measures, we're risking the safety of our children, pedestrians, and other road users. Currently, drivers tend to accelerate through this stretch, making it difficult for pedestrians, particularly school children, to safely cross the road. The lack of stops not only increases the potential for accidents but also affects the quality of life for residents, who have to deal with constant speeding noise and the growing fear of inevitable accidents.

Implementing a four-way stop at this intersection is a realistic and effective measure to slow down traffic and increase safety. Evidence from similar residential areas shows that four-way stops are effective in reducing vehicle speeds and minimizing collision risks. According to a study by the Federal Highway Administration, stop signs at intersections have successfully lowered vehicle speed averages by up to 43% in residential zones.

The community needs this four-way stop as a preventive measure. By installing such a stop, we can ensure crossing safety for school children and provide peace of mind for parents, who deserve to know their children are safe on their way to and from school. Additionally, it will help in reducing noise pollution caused by speeding vehicles, creating a more pleasant living environment.

We urge the local authorities to prioritize this safety measure and act promptly. Installing a four-way stop at Paseo De Suerte and Paseo De Este is not just an enhancement but a necessity to protect our community.

Please sign this petition to demand action from the El Paso traffic management team to implement a four-way stop at this crucial intersection. Your support is vital in making our neighborhood a safer place for everyone.
