The Issue

For us, the proud students and graduates of University of Fredericton (UFred), an in-person graduation represents much more than a mere ceremony - it is the climax of years woven by unyielding hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. A journey that had us walking a tightrope, balancing fervent studies alongside work and familial duties, we've emerged from these trials more resilient than ever before. This experience wasn't a single-player game; our loved ones have been an intrinsic part of this journey, staying up with us through countless long nights and difficult moments. An in-person ceremony would enable us to acknowledge their tireless support and share our accomplishment with them - a tangible celebration of our collective victory.

We acknowledge and value UFred's commitment to accessible education and its history of virtual convocations. However, while it's been prudent during times of crisis, a Stanford University study has found that a digital event can never replace the interpersonal experience an in-person event offers (Stanford University, 2020). The intangibly profound sense of accomplishment that comes from physically walking across the stage, the elated smiles of friends and family, the triumphant tossing of the caps - these are moments that should not be reduced to pixels on a screen.

Through this petition, we graciously request UFred to consider our plea. Let us celebrate our accomplishments in the way we've dreamt of, and make an exception to their digital norm by hosting an in-person graduation ceremony. It's more than just a ritual; it's a rite of passage that we very much look forward to celebrating. Please sign this petition to support this cause.
