Petition to Meta Platforms, Inc.

Dear Meta Platforms Team,

We respectfully petition Meta (including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and associated services) to revise the current flag emoji representing Iran by replacing it with the pre-1979 Lion and Sun emblem, in alignment with the approach previously adopted by X (formerly Twitter) under Elon Musk’s leadership.

The current flag design features an emblem that numerous Iranians perceive as profoundly antagonistic to the nation’s ancient cultural heritage and traditional values. Restoring the Lion and Sun would more accurately represent the entirety of Iranian historical and cultural identity, excluding the tumultuous era that followed the 1979 revolution.

Moreover, the current flag is the official symbol of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a regime widely recognized for its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism and for policies that have resulted in systematic persecution, mass violence, and acts amounting to genocide against the indigenous civilian population of the country.

By adopting the Lion and Sun emblem, Meta would demonstrate respect for the cultural legacy of the Iranian people and acknowledge the concerns of millions who view the present flag as a representation of oppression rather than national identity.

We kindly urge Meta to implement this change at the earliest opportunity.
