The Issue

Let's keep sharing! With support from many we can move mountains!

Once we have approval from the RDN we can move forward with our funding applications! WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

I have always believed in the power of having a sanctuary where people of all ages can come together to enjoy their passions in a safe, inclusive environment. Gabriola Island is home to a vibrant and growing horse community, a community that includes enthusiastic young riders and wise, experienced seniors. But we lack an essential facility that could bring us all together: an equitation arena. This is why I am petitioning the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) to build a full-sized equitation arena at Rollo McClay Park.

Currently, riders on the island must travel long distances to access suitable facilities, which not only takes them away from their community but also deprives local youth and seniors of the opportunity to train and engage in equestrian activities near their homes. A dedicated equitation arena right here in Rollo McClay Park would dramatically change this scenario, providing a venue for training, competitions, and equestrian events that the whole community can enjoy.

The addition of this arena would greatly enhance our island's infrastructure without significantly impacting the existing natural environment. Design considerations can ensure that the arena blends harmoniously with the park's landscapes, preserving the beauty of Gabriola that we all cherish. It would also promote inclusivity by providing equal access to equestrian activities for people of all ages and abilities, strengthening the bonds within our community.

Statistics have shown the benefits of increased physical activity and social engagement, especially for youth and seniors. According to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), regular physical activity is essential for healthy aging and can delay or prevent chronic illnesses. For the youth, horseback riding promotes discipline, responsibility, and companionship. Therefore, an equitation arena is not just a luxury; it is a necessity for our community's well-being.

I urge the RDN to recognize the growing needs of our island's horse enthusiasts and to consider the long-term benefits of supporting our local equestrian culture. The full-sized equitation arena at Rollo McClay Park will not only serve our current community but will also stand as a legacy for future generations of riders.

Please join me in this cause to create a safer, more inclusive, and vibrant environment by signing this petition. Together, we can make Gabriola a beacon of equestrian excellence that respects and enhances our natural surroundings.
