Request that TFL -RBK Highways remove the Moor Lane Chessington Bus Lane
The Issue
We ask that TFL - RBK Highways Department remove the ridiculous short length of Bus Lane in Moor Lane Chessington outside the Methodist Church. Albeit it is only enforced between 07:00hr to 10:00hrs Mon -Fri this is a period of high level of traffic and means traffic approaching the mini roundabout at the Church Rise - Bridge Road junction is compressed into the outside lane and you see the back up of traffic actually holds up buses approaching the roundabout wasting more time than the Bus Lane gains them.
There is a pedestrian crossing, traffic emerging from Church Lane (using the A243 - Garrison Lane Rat Run ) and the mini roundabout. Drivers have enough to do to safely negotiate this length of road without reading the restriction sign, think about what day it is and the time of day.
Hence inevitably vehicles keep out of the lane for most of the day so the lane remains empty for most of the time compounding the amount of traffic backed up in the outside lane approaching the mini roundabout and you can see the bus lane empty at times when it could be used by all traffic.
Vehicles exiting Church Lane have to go out into the outside lane and then go back into the inside lane at the mini roundabout if they are going straight down Bridge Road when they could enter the inside lane straightaway if the Bus Lane was not there.
The Bus Lane raises a safety issue for cyclist and motor cyclist with traffic cutting back into the inside lane just before the mini roundabout as they can use the bus lane, with drivers having to concentrate on the traffic approaching the roundabout from the other roads feeding it and also have to be aware of cyclist and motor cyclist passing on the inside.
Right from its instigation residents have thought this short length of Bus Lane is ludicrous, creates more problems than its worth for buses , cyclist as well as other traffic and we ask the road is restored back to normal as soon as possible .
