The Issue

Dr. Weldu Michael Weldeyesus—an educator, community leader, and father of four—is currently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Tacoma Northwest Detention Center. His detention is causing severe harm to his family and community and raises serious humanitarian and human rights concerns. Although Dr. Weldeyesus recently relocated to Salem, Oregon, he spent the majority of his more than 20 years in the United States in Colorado, where he lived, studied, taught, and served the community. He earned a PhD in Sociocultural Linguistics from the University of Colorado Boulder and devoted his career to education and mentorship. He worked as an instructor, academic advisor, and program coordinator at CU Boulder, supported first-generation and underrepresented students through the McNair Scholars Program, and later taught English and developmental courses at the Community College of Denver. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Weldeyesus is known as a devoted father & husband, a committed church member, and a tireless volunteer. He served on the Board of the Tigrai Community of Colorado for six years, taught children their heritage language, volunteered weekly at church, and consistently showed up for families in need. His integrity, humility, and service have left a lasting impact on countless lives. Dr. Weldeyesus is also from Tigray, Ethiopia—a region in which human rights violations have been documented by international organizations. Since moving to Oregon, Dr. Weldeyesus has remained an active member of his church and community and a critical source of stability for his wife and four young children, ages 4 to 10. His detention has caused profound emotional and financial hardship for his family and sent fear throughout the community he has long served. Dr. Weldeyesus poses no threat to public safety. His life’s work reflects education, service, and compassion. We are calling for his immediate release or humanitarian parole while his case is reviewed, so he can be reunited with his family and community. By signing this petition, you are standing up for family unity, human dignity, and justice—and calling on decision-makers to act with compassion and fairness.
