Request Jonesborough Aldermen Vote NO on a Budget with a 28% Tax Increase

Request Jonesborough Aldermen Vote NO on a Budget with a 28% Tax Increase
The Issue
To the Honorable Aldermen of the Town of Jonesborough:
We, the undersigned citizens and taxpayers of Jonesborough, Tennessee, respectfully petition you to vote NO on the proposed budget that was discussed at the meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen on July 14, 2025.
At that meeting (video: BMA Meeting), it was presented that the proposed budget includes:
- A 28% increase in the town tax rate
- Adjustments to municipal fees, with limited detail provided
Why we object:
- These increases come at a time when many families, seniors on fixed incomes, and small businesses in Jonesborough are already struggling with the rising cost of living.
- A sudden tax hike of this magnitude places an unfair burden on homeowners and renters, potentially driving people out of our community.
- There was not sufficient transparency during the meeting regarding specific line items, cost drivers, or alternative measures to reduce spending.
- Citizens need a clear, itemized explanation of why such an increase is necessary before approval.
- While the Mayor can provide input, only you, the Aldermen, hold the power to approve or reject this budget. The Mayor does not cast a vote unless there is a tie.
We are not against progress. We value investments that make Jonesborough a better place. But we strongly believe:
- Any tax increases should be incremental and reasonable, with transparency about how funds will be used.
- The town leadership must provide detailed information and justifications before asking for such a significant increase.
The proposed tax rate seems exorbitant when there is already so much and continually increasing residential development which adds to the collected tax revenue, as well as grants already paying for portions of the infrastructural improvements to Jonesborough.
Therefore, we urge you: When this budget comes up for a vote, stand with the citizens of Jonesborough and vote NO. We call on you to return to the table and work toward a budget that is fair, sustainable, and respectful of the people you represent.
