The Issue

For almost four decades, the Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple in Woolwich has stood as a pillar of strength and community for the residents of South-East London and Kent. It is not just a place of worship but a vital community hub that welcomes people from all walks of life. From elderly devotees, individuals with disabilities and mobility challenges, to families with young children, the temple supports hundreds of residents weekly. Its significance extends to nursery users, volunteers diligently performing their duties, and the wider community who find solace within its walls.

Recently, Greenwich Council announced plans to implement parking permits and paid parking bays on St Margaret's Grove, SE18 7RL operating from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm, seven days a week. We respect the need for structured parking policies, but this new measure will severely impact the worshippers and nursery parents ability to access the temple. Our request is to modify these parking restrictions to weekdays, Monday through Friday, from 12.00 pm to 3.00 pm (exempt on the weekends and public holidays).

This adjustment will greatly alleviate the strain on our community members who rely on easy access to the temple. Parking during current peak hours presents a barrier for those with mobility impairments or families who need proximity parking due to young children. It burdens volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to maintain the temple and hinders community gatherings, crucial for maintaining cultural and social bonds.

Statistics from the Greenwich Community Overview show that a significant portion of our community falls under the elderly and persons with disabilities category, necessitating the need for thoughtful parking solutions. This proposed amendment will maintain balance, allowing the temple’s operations to continue unhampered while aligning with community needs.
