Subject: Request for Suo Moto Cognizance and Fast Track Trial of Heinous Rape Incident in Kolkata
Respected Lordship,
We the concerned citizen of India, are writing this letter with a heavy heart in light of the recent horrific rape and murder of a young trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, which occurred on the night of August 9, 2024. This ghastly incident has shaken the conscience of the nation and highlights the urgent need for judicial intervention to ensure that justice is served expeditiously.
The nature of this crime, which took place within the supposed safety of a hospital, is a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of women even in spaces where they should feel secure. The medical community has since been in turmoil, with widespread protests and a demand for swift justice.
In view of the gravity of this crime and the widespread public outcry, We humbly request your Lordship to take suo moto cognizance of this case. Given the severe impact this crime has on the fabric of society, it is imperative that the case be transferred to a fast-track court to ensure a swift and just trial. Furthermore, this case serves as a reminder of the need for a systematic approach to handling such heinous crimes, where delays in justice can lead to a loss of public faith in the judicial process.
We also urge your Lordship to consider issuing guidelines for the establishment of more fast-track courts specifically dedicated to handling rape cases across the country. The expeditious trial and punishment of perpetrators of such crimes will not only serve as a deterrent but will also help in restoring the faith of citizens in the rule of law.
We trust in the wisdom and fairness of the Hon'ble Supreme Court and hope that under your Lordship’s esteemed leadership, justice will be delivered swiftly in this case, and steps will be taken to prevent such atrocities from recurring.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Yours sincerely,
Nitish Roy
