Dear Attorney General Campbell,

We write to you as active Uber and Lyft drivers who are deeply appreciative of the tireless efforts your office has made to hold app-based companies accountable. The historic June 27, 2024 settlement secured by your office - guaranteeing Massachusetts rideshare drivers a minimum of $32.50 per hour (set to increase to $33.48 on January 1, 2025) and recovering $175 million in restitution, was a groundbreaking achievement that gave hope to thousands of hardworking drivers across the Commonwealth. For this, we sincerely thank you.

However, as drivers who stand to be directly impacted by this settlement, we are growing increasingly concerned about the lack of clear and direct communication regarding the timeline and process for distributing these funds. Many of us are still waiting, months later, with no transparency and no updates from any official channels. This delay and silence have created widespread confusion and anxiety in the driver community.

What has compounded our concern is that certain advocacy groups and lobbyists—who do not include a single working driver - have positioned themselves as intermediaries between your office and us. These groups are holding tightly scripted meetings that restrict open dialogue, bar unscripted questions, and in some cases have outright removed active drivers who simply wanted to ask genuine questions. This dynamic is unacceptable.

As drivers who navigate this industry every day, we believe we are the most qualified to speak about the challenges we face and the solutions we need. Our exclusion from the discussion erodes the trust we’ve placed in the settlement process and undermines the goal of worker-centered justice your office has championed.

We respectfully and urgently request the following:

1-Transparency: That your office publicly outlines the current status and expected timeline of settlement fund distribution.

2-Accountability: That a review is conducted to understand how meetings about the settlement were organized and why active drivers were blocked/excluded from meaningful participation.

3-Inclusion: That your office directly engages drivers - through a publicly announced, open, and unscripted town hall or listening session - so that the real voices of drivers are part of the conversation moving forward.

Massachusetts rideshare drivers are not just stakeholders - we are the core of this industry. Decisions about our lives and livelihoods should never be made without our direct input. We call on your office to ensure the values of transparency, inclusion, and justice remain at the center of this process.

Esta demora y silencio han generado confusión y ansiedad generalizadas en la comunidad de conductores.

Lo que ha agravado nuestra preocupación es que ciertos grupos de defensa y cabilderos, entre los que no hay ningún conductor en activo, se han posicionado como intermediarios entre su oficina y nosotros. Estos grupos celebran reuniones estrictamente programadas que restringen el diálogo abierto, impiden las preguntas improvisadas y, en algunos casos, han expulsado directamente a conductores activos que simplemente querían hacer preguntas genuinas. Esta dinámica es inaceptable.

Como conductores que nos desenvolvemos en esta industria a diario, creemos ser los más capacitados para hablar sobre los desafíos que enfrentamos y las soluciones que necesitamos. Nuestra exclusión del debate erosiona la confianza que hemos depositado en el proceso de conciliación y el objetivo de justicia centrada en los trabajadores que su oficina ha defendido.

Solicitamos respetuosa y urgentemente lo siguiente:

1- Transparencia: Que su oficina describa públicamente el estado actual y el cronograma previsto para la distribución de los fondos del acuerdo.

2- Rendición de cuentas: Que se realice una revisión para comprender cómo se organizaron las reuniones sobre el acuerdo y por qué se excluyó a los conductores activos de una participación significativa.

3- Inclusión: Que su oficina involucre directamente a los conductores, a través de una sección abierta, espontánea y anunciada públicamente, o una sesión de escucha, para que sus voces reales formen parte de la conversación en el futuro.

Los conductores de viajes compartidos de Massachusetts no solo somos partes interesadas; somos el núcleo de esta industria. Las decisiones sobre nuestras vidas y medios de vida nunca deben tomarse sin nuestra participación directa. Exhortamos a su oficina a garantizar que los valores de transparencia, inclusión y justicia sigan siendo el centro de este proceso.
