Request for conferring the long-awaited Bharat Ratna upon Ghazal Maestro, Dr. Jagjit Singh

The Issue

An iconic music composer and one of the most versatile singers of a mind boggling diverse genre of Ghazals, Nazams, Geets, Bhajans, Gurbani Shabads including classical numbers in multiple languages, Dr. Jagjit Singh was last conferred with a Padma Bhushan Award by the Indian Government lead by Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee in 2003 and later honored with the release of a few commemorative postal stamps by Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh in 2014.

Like millions worldwide, my life has been profoundly impacted by the soulful melodies and heart-touching music of Dr. Jagjit Singh. His artistry, ability to stir the human spirit with his music, remains unappreciated in its true dimension as he has not been bestowed with the highest civilian award in India – the Bharat Ratna - even after 25 years since it was first proposed in 2000 and has been retreated several times later on too by this author and many others in my close circles.

Jagjit Singh's fans from the world over have been making multiple calls in individual capacities and through small staggered groups at different timings as a result of which perhaps the officialdom is unable to gauge the true weight and momentum of this sentiment and I deem it better now to bring all such callers on change.com, as one global unifying platform where all of Jagjit Singh's fans may join from every nook and corner of the world now and sign, support and re-share this petition further in their respective social networks to garner maximum number of signatories for this call for the Government to be able to announce this most well deserved and long awaited highest civilian award for Dr. Jagjit Singh now.

Jagjit Singh, we may recall again was not just a singer; he was also a music composer par excellence, and an incredible artist whose music transcended borders and touched the hearts of people across all cultures and nations, besides being a great human being and an equally great philanthropist. His outstanding contribution to the Indian music industry and global cultural landscape deserves recognition at the highest level. His music, even today, reaches millions, encouraging them in their moments of despair, uplifting their spirits and touching their hearts.

The Bharat Ratna Award should honor only the best – the people who have translated their passion into such a profound impact. Dr. Jagjit Singh is surely one such individual who in fact deserved this award for his immense all round contribution long ago when he was physically enthralling the Universe!

Let's join together and make this dream wish of us all a reality too soon, now!
