Why federal oversight matters

Petition Update. 1817 signatures and still growing A recent New York Times article about the proposed Washington triumphal arch highlights an issue that is directly relevant to the ongoing federal review of the William F. Cribari Bridge. The article explains how the National Park Service, under the current Section 106 regulations, is evaluating not only physical impacts to historic places but also effects on historic setting, views, cultural landscapes, and the relationships among historic resources. Those are many of the same types of considerations that have been raised by consulting parties during the Cribari Bridge review. At the same time, proposed revisions to the Section 106 regulations are moving through the federal rulemaking process. Those proposals have not yet become effective, and the existing regulations continue to govern ongoing consultations. This underscores why a complete, transparent, and legally sound review of the Cribari Bridge remains so important. Whatever the eventual outcome, the federal review should proceed under the regulations currently in force, with full consideration of the historic district, its setting, and the concerns already raised by recognized consulting parties.
