Request federal government to make CPP and OAS tax-free
The Issue
Reaching retirement age has brought new challenges to my life, particularly the increasing cost of living as a senior citizen. Like many others, I am dependent on the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) for financial support. However, the reality of these benefits being taxed has added an unforeseen financial burden on my limited income.
We have contributed to the CPP throughout our working lives, already fulfilling our tax obligations on those earnings. It seems unjust that they should be taxed once again when we most need the financial security they were designed to provide. It's important for the government to recognize that retirement is a phase of life where financial predictability and security are crucial.
Statistics show that the cost of living is steadily rising, with seniors being one of the hardest-hit groups, often facing increased costs in healthcare, housing, and everyday expenses. According to the Government of Canada's statistics on senior poverty, approximately 12% of seniors are living below the poverty line, and this percentage is climbing.
The taxation of CPP and OAS benefits amplifies the financial struggle for many seniors, making it difficult to maintain a dignified and comfortable life post-retirement. By making these benefits tax-free, the government can make a tangible difference in the lives of millions of retirees, allowing them to better afford essential living costs without the fear of financial insecurity.
We urge the Canadian federal government to reconsider the tax policy regarding CPP and OAS benefits. Removing taxes on these benefits would provide much-needed relief and align with the principle of respecting and supporting our seniors.
Please join me in signing this petition. Let's come together to advocate for a fairer and more supportive tax system for retirees in Canada. Your support can help make a difference in the lives of many who have spent their lives contributing to the prosperity of our nation.
