The Issue

As an A-Level Chemistry student, the recent examination has left many of us feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. Despite our dedication and countless hours of preparation, the structure of the exam seemed insurmountable for those of us striving for an A or B. Instead of a fair assessment of our skills and understanding, the exam felt tailored to those pursuing A* grades for courses such as Medicine or Chemical Engineering at top universities.

This isn't just about a tough test—it's about the unfair distribution and accessibility of marks. The questions were disproportionately designed to challenge top performers, leaving less high-achieving students at a disadvantage. Data shows that the majority of students require grades A or B to pursue their future studies, vocational courses, or careers, yet the design of such exams is placing unnecessary hurdles in their path.

Chemistry is not just a subject for future doctors and engineers. It forms the basis for numerous professions and fields. AQA, as a leading examination body, must ensure that their exams fairly measure the capabilities of all students, not just the elite few aiming for the highest marks.

We call upon AQA to review and amend their exam papers and marking schemes so that they offer a balanced challenge. This will provide an opportunity for all students to showcase their knowledge and achieve the grades they deserve.

By signing this petition, you support fairer exams for A-Level Chemistry students. Together, we can urge AQA to reassess their approach, and champion a fairer educational system for everyone.
