Over the past month, our neighborhood in Old East Rome has faced a significant safety concern: speeding in a residential area. Parked cars have been hit and totaled by speeding vehicles twice in the past month. Providing a stark reminder of the dangers on our streets, these incidents have left our community shaken and vulnerable. This isn't just an issue of property damage, but also one of safety for our children, pets, and the pedestrians who regularly traverse our neighborhood. 

Our streets should be sanctuaries for families and individuals, not threats. Our children play here, our neighbors walk their pets, and we should all feel secure knowing that our city stands with us in ensuring our safety. Yet, without any speed control measures in place, such as speed bumps, enhanced signage, or strategic monitoring, we risk more accidents, injuries, or even worse.

Let us urge the City of Rome’s local government to take immediate action. There are practical, tested measures that can be implemented swiftly, such as installing speed bumps and employing increased traffic monitoring through the use of speed cameras or frequent police patrols. Communities like ours have found success with these solutions, resulting in safer, more peaceful neighborhoods.

Moreover, the presence of deterrents like speed bumps or respectful police visibility positively influences driver behavior, promoting a culture of caution and responsibility.
