Support for the Means Street Landmark District and related preservation of the former Engineer’s Bookstore is currently threatened. Some property owners within the District, including the new owner of the Bookstore, wish to declare their buildings “non-contributing” despite the fact that they are currently documented as contributing historic structures within the Means Street National Register District. The City has taken a position that all recognized structures within the district must remain classified as contributing in order to justify the Landmark District. Among the reasons an owner would not want their property classified as “contributing” is so that they have the ability to demolish it. The citizens of Atlanta deserve a voice in how their historic resources are managed now and for the future. For those who feel strongly about this issue, please post your comments here and join us at upcoming public meetings:
> Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU-E) meeting on Tue 3Jan 6:30pm at Peachtree Christian Church, enter in rear, 1580 Peachtree St NE 30309
> Zoning Review Board (ZRB) meeting Thu 12Jan 6:00pm, City Council Chambers, second floor, 55 Trinity Avenue 30303, second floor (this item is last on agenda: Case Z-16-81)
