Marietta Street Artery Association
Sep 2, 2016
On August 24th, the Atlanta Urban Design Commission approved the nomination resolution for the Means Street Landmark District. A strong supporting argument for local protection of the Engineers Bookstore building and the accompanying Historic District was led by AUDC Director Doug Young, after which members of the community and the Marietta Street Artery Association also offered remarks supporting the nomination. Our CHANGE.ORG petition containing over 2400 signatures and 37 pages of supporting statements was also hand delivered to the commission.
During the public hearing, a representative of the new owner of the Engineer's Bookstore stated that in light of this nomination, they are re-considering their demolition plans, and are exploring alternative uses for the property. Any potential demolition or re-development plans will not be allowed to proceed until such time as the administration process relative to the landmark district is completed. The proposed district must be approved by Atlanta City Council and finally authorized by the Mayor’s office.
We wish to thank those of you who have supported this important cause and we encourage you and others to continue to share and support this petition to the Mayor, until such time as the Means Street Landmark District protection becomes a reality!
Your voices remain crucial to our efforts and we hope they will remain loud and strong for this cause and for other significant pieces of Atlanta’s history that remain threatened.
