Newmarket has lost a number of street trees in recent years.

Some have been replaced but the majority have not.

In fact, Newmarket falls well below the recommended tree canopy area of 20%. Newmarket averages just 10.4% compared to Bury St Edmunds 24.9%, Ipswich 18.9% and Stowmarket 18.1%. We are even below some central London wards - even some without parks!

A group of residents has suggested that they fundraise so that these lost trees can be replaced and planted professionally without taking funds from local budgets. We are not asking for anything new merely asking to replace that which has been lost.

We are struggling to get permission hence this petition.

We would like to prove that the residents of Newmarket support the replacement of streets trees that have been lost.

The benefits of street trees include:

• increased biodiversity 
• reduced flooding risk
• reduced urban heat island effect and provide shade
• improved mental health
• increased carbon capture
• reduced pollution 
• improved air quality and related respiratory illness
•  improved neighboorhood image
