Replace Lewiston Schools' Controversial Mascots for a More Positive Identity

Replace Lewiston Schools' Controversial Mascots for a More Positive Identity
The Issue
This petition is deeply personal to many of us in the Lewiston community. In 2017, we were shaken by the tragic suicide of a student at Lewiston Middle School. During that difficult time, our community came together to support each other and the family. This was the first time I remember being called by the school to pray. However, we found ourselves questioning how we could offer prayers and support while simultaneously endorsing mascots named "Demons" and "Devils" at our schools. There have been too many times since 2017 that we have asked this question.
The names of these mascots have been controversial for years due to their negative connotations. The very school that was set up as a command center for over 300 law enforcement officers last month is now back to chanting for devils.
Research has shown that school mascots can significantly influence the school environment and students' perceptions about their schools (American Psychological Association). With this in mind, it's crucial that our schools represent values such as unity, positivity, and resilience rather than negativity or controversy.
We propose changing the Lewiston High School mascot from a "Devil" and the Lewiston Middle School mascot from a "Demon". By doing so, we can foster a more positive identity for our schools which will be beneficial for current students as well as future generations. No more raising Demons to be future Devils. This is not about going forward with any hidden agendas, this is about stopping one.
