The Issue

Highlandville, MO is a peaceful community, home to many families who appreciate the safety and tranquility the town provides. Recently, plans have emerged to build a new roundabout at the intersection of EE and 160. While roundabouts can be effective in certain situations, the proposed location has raised significant concerns among local residents.

The primary worry is that a roundabout, due to its design, could lead to more confusion and accidents, particularly for large vehicles and those unfamiliar with the area. The terrain and layout of this intersection aren't ideally suited for a roundabout, and it may disrupt the flow of traffic, rather than improve it. Many community members believe that the introduction of turning lanes at key points would be a safer and more efficient solution.

Turn lanes could effectively manage traffic without the steep learning curve that roundabouts often impose. This approach respects the traditional driving methods local drivers are accustomed to, minimizing the risk of traffic delays and accidents. In many other towns, turn lanes have been successfully implemented to reduce congestion and enhance roadway safety.

The community has voiced their strong opposition to the proposed plan through various forums and public meetings. Survey results and petitions have shown overwhelming support for left turn lanes over a roundabout. It's crucial that our town leaders and decision-makers listen to the voices of those they represent and take action that aligns with the wishes of the majority.

We urge the MoDot to reconsider the current proposal and allocate resources towards creating turn lanes at this intersection. This solution not only aligns with the community’s preference but also promises to maintain the safety and efficiency of our roads.

This petition reflects the unified stance of Highlandville residents who prioritize the safety and ease of travel within our community. Join us in requesting a re-evaluation of this project by signing this petition. Let's ensure that any updates to our roads truly serve the needs of Highlandville's inhabitants.

Our concerns are based on the following:

1. Safety Risks – A roundabout is not safe or practical for the large number of residents who drive with trailers, RVs, or farming equipment. These vehicles struggle to navigate the tight turns and traffic flow of roundabouts.

2. Danger in Poor Weather – Missouri winters create icy and slick roads. A roundabout becomes more dangerous than helpful in snow, ice, and fog conditions.

3. Inconvenient for Emergency and School Vehicles – Fire trucks, ambulances, and school buses require wide turns and clear paths. A roundabout can slow emergency response times and create unnecessary hazards for large vehicles.

4. We Prefer Simpler, Safer Alternatives – A traditional traffic light with turning lanes would better serve the needs of our rural town without causing new problems.

We believe this roundabout is an unnecessary solution. We ask that MoDOT consider our voices and halt plans for roundabout construction.
