Replace Green Number Plates on EVs With a Small EV Badge – Modernise India’s EV Policy

The Issue

Electric Vehicles in India currently use a full green number plate as per MoRTH rules. While the intention is good, the design affects aesthetics, visibility, and long-term durability.

Most modern countries – including UK, Germany, UAE, Singapore – identify EVs using a small green EV badge or a thin green strip, not by colouring the entire plate.

We request the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, to:

✔ Allow EV owners to use a standard white number plate with a small reflective green EV badge
OR
✔ Give EV users the option to choose between a green plate and a standard plate with an EV badge

Why this change is needed
🔹 Full green plates fade quickly under rain, sunlight and dust
🔹 They affect vehicle aesthetics, especially premium EVs
🔹 A small badge is cheaper, cleaner and globally accepted
🔹 FASTag and VAHAN already store EV data – colour coding is not needed
🔹 Encourages more people to adopt EVs

This simple update will modernise India’s EV policy while still keeping identification easy for authorities.
