Replace Congress with Technology

The Issue

What is the goal of this campaign? The goal of this campaign is to start a movement, to (hopefully) replace Congress as it is today, with direct democracy, where all bills are voted into law by the American public.

But the USA is a Constitutional Republic, not a Democracy. Actually it is both. Regardless, nothing is ever permanent and it can be whatever we want it to be. Please read on.

Why is this needed? Both branches of Congress, as they stand today, are broken. They simply do not work. They take turns swapping which of the two major political parties dominates the seats in each branch. During the winning party's 'tenure', they mostly spend their days bickering with each other, sneaking additional laws into bills (aka riders). It is clear that in recent decades, the only bills that end up being voted into law are mostly (heavily) influenced by lobbyists and special interest groups which support the political party 'in charge' at that time.

That seems like a strange way to operate. Why has nothing been done to change this in 200+ years? I'm not sure there is a straightforward answer to this. It is a combination of:

  • this is the "way it has been"
  • a change of such magnitude would likely require amendment to the constitution - not easy
  • Congress is setup in such a way that they self-govern, with their own checks and balances to prevent such a thing

So what are you proposing here? We believe that there is a more efficient way to operate. Technology has improved significantly since the last time an operational change was made in Congress (1979 according to visitthecapitol.gov). We as citizens no longer require a person to "represent" us. We can represent ourselves via a secure voting application (internet for most, telephone (voice) for some) with two factor/biometric authentication and an intuitive user interface.

But what would happen to the existing members of Congress? I think that is up to them. They can choose to embrace change, or leave with their lifetime benefits. I envision the congress members ultimately being phased out and replaced with legal writers (to translate requirements from the public into bills to be voted on) and a large IT department (support desk, security teams, devops, etc). I firmly believe that financially it would be a "break even" for us, as younger talent will not require the same salaries as the current congress members.
