The Issue

I'm a concerned parent and member of the Schaumburg community, and I am calling for the vital improvement of the playground facilities at Enders Salk Elementary School. Over the years, this playground has become the heart of our community, a cherished place where our children gather to play, explore, and grow. However, the conditions have deteriorated significantly, and it is no longer the safe haven it once was.

The playground has become increasingly unsafe due to damaged structures and worn-out equipment. Cracks in the slides and swings, rusted metal bars, and holes on the surface pose significant risks of injury. It is imperative that the Schaumburg Park District and/or D54 take immediate action to repair and replace the faulty equipment before an accident happens.

In our vibrant community, the playground serves not just as a recreational space but also as an integral part of the students' social and physical development. Studies have shown that outdoor play boosts children's physical health, supports mental wellness, and encourages social skills. Depriving our children of a safe outdoor play area impacts not just their leisure time but also their growth and well-being.

We understand that maintaining public spaces requires both time and resources, but investing in our children's safety and future cannot be sidelined. We propose a comprehensive assessment of the current playground by qualified inspectors. Following the evaluation, outdated and broken equipment should be upgraded to meet current safety standards by professionals within a specified timeline, ideally completed before the start of the upcoming school year.

In support of this initiative, we urge the Schaumburg Park District and/or D54 to allocate funds to this essential project that benefits hundreds of students and community members. By ensuring a safe and engaging environment for our children, the district would reaffirm its commitment to fostering a supportive and caring community.

Please join us in advocating for the safety and well-being of our children. Sign this petition to prompt the repair and replacement of the Enders Salk Elementary School playground. Together, we can ensure our community's children have a safe place to play and learn.

“Thank you for reaching out and sharing the community's interest in the Enders-Salk playground. As it turns out, the Schaumburg Park District has already scheduled the Enders-Salk playground for replacement in 2027 as part of our ongoing capital improvement program. Prior to replacing a playground, we typically host a public open house to gather feedback from residents regarding the design and features of the new playground. We anticipate holding this meeting in spring of 2027. As part of that process, we will post notices at the existing playground, reach out to neighboring residents, and coordinate with our partners at School District 54 to encourage community participation. We appreciate hearing from our residents and always welcome their thoughts and suggestions as we continue working to provide quality parks and recreational opportunities for our community. Thank you again for reaching out! The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]”
