The Issue

Sadly, not everyone in the horse industry treats horses with the respect and care they deserve. Recent events have exposed the disturbing actions of a professional horse producer and show judge already notorious for doping horses.

A video circulated on Facebook shows a horse in his care with its head painfully tied into its chest, a breaking dummy on its back, and left in a turnout paddock for an excruciating length of time.

This act of cruelty sparked widespread public outrage. The Horse of the Year Show has suspended the individual from competing this year, and four prominent showing societies — The British Show Horse Association (BSHA), Sport Horse GB, the Irish Draught Horse Society (IDHS), and the Coloured Horse and Pony Society (CHAPS) — have also suspended him pending investigation.

However, suspensions are not enough for an individual who has systematically abused horses in his care.

In 2019, this same producer was suspended for three months and ordered to pay a £500 fine and £2,000 in costs after a horse in his care tested positive for potassium bromide.

Recently, Archie, a pony in his care, developed seizures and later tested positive for potassium bromide.

This individual has consistently shown a blatant disregard for horse welfare — publicly defending his actions by stating “the horse was not left it was being watched on camera” and boasting in an open conversation with the rider, “absolutely nobody can beat the dream team (even though after today's posts some want to try),” to which the rider replied, “Jokers - nobodies who can't do the job and want to prove to themselves and everyone else why - cringe :) xxxxx”

People who place their personal ambitions and livelihoods above the wellbeing of the animals in their care must not be allowed to continue in positions that give them access to abuse innocent creatures.

It is imperative that we take a stand to protect these horses from further harm.

We therefore call on the Showing Societies to take a firm stand by imposing a lifetime ban on this individual and by committing to promote horse welfare and responsible horsemanship among their members.

We also call on the RSPCA to impose a lifetime ban preventing this individual from keeping, training, or working with horses in any capacity. Such decisive action would send a clear message to all abusers and help safeguard the future of horses everywhere.

Please sign this petition urging the relevant authorities to impose a lifetime ban on this individual and protect the safety and welfare of all horses.

Together, we can make a difference for these voiceless animals.
