Repeal the “spanking law”

Repeal the “spanking law”
The Issue
Repealing the spanking law is imperative in addressing the deep-rooted trauma and psychological harm that corporal punishment has historically inflicted on children, particularly in residential schools. The history of residential schools in many countries, including Canada, is marked by severe physical and emotional abuse, where children were subjected to harsh disciplinary methods, including spanking and other forms of corporal punishment. These practices have left lasting scars on survivors, contributing to long-term mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. By repealing the spanking law, we understand the trauma that Indigenous peoples have faced due to residential schools and recognize that hitting or spanking a child is an inappropriate form of punishment
