The Issue

As a student with autism at Niskayuna High School, I face unique challenges daily. My belief system, which mandates certain freedoms, is severely impeded by a school rule: the pass requirement. This rule has made life difficult. My quality of life has deteriorated.

This rule not only hampers my needs but also pushes the school's security team to take a stringent course of action. They are committed to enforcing this policy, distracting them from potential security threats. A recent incident where an unauthorized individual gained entrance into the school speaks volumes about how the policy has diminished the effectiveness of outdoor security.

Notably, the pass requirement is not indiscriminately applied, leading to discrepancies that adversely affect some students. When I came to Niskayuna High School, it was for the liberties it offered. However, these freedoms are slowly melting away, creating a harmful environment for students like me. The way the system currently operates infringes on my belief system (First Amendment rights and freedoms) and stifles personal and academic growth. I avoided expulsion by the skin of my teeth and get to remain in school. We need to prioritize DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) in our schools again. We need as diverse of a student body as possible and not punishing students for being different. We should provide students with the resources they need and not punishing students for speaking up. We should include various minorities and not shun students out for being different.

This is a call to repeal the pass requirement and allow students to go wherever they want in the school during their resource rooms, and participate in forming school policies. We, the students, are the key stakeholders in our environment. Therefore, our input must be taken into account when creating policies that affect our daily school lives.

We had two cafeterias that merged into one, and now the lunch staff has to bring EVERYTHING to the other cafeteria, disrupting classes with loud carts.

Repealing this rule and involving students in policy-making will not only protect the rights of students like me who have special needs but will also promote a sense of ownership and belonging among all students.

I urge students, parents, educators, and anyone who believes in fostering an inclusive learning environment to sign this petition. Let's ensure that Niskayuna High School stands as a beacon of love, inclusion, and diversity. Your signature can make a difference. Sign this petition and help us reshape our school into a sanctuary for every student again!
