As a responsible gun owner living with three family members, it has become imperative for me to advocate for a change in our state's laws. In the unfortunate event that I would have to defend our home, I would want to ensure my family is safe from all hazards—including the potential risk of hearing loss from an unsuppressed gunshots. Therefore, I'm writing this petition to appeal to the relevant authorities for a repeal of the ban on firearms suppressors in California.

Firearms suppressors, often misleadingly thought of as a tool to carry out covert destruction, are actually more commonly used as hearing safety devices. They reduce the decibel level of a gunshot by dampening the sound of combustion coming out of the barrel. A typical gunshot is around 160 decibels, loud enough to cause instant hearing damage. With a suppressor, this can be decreased to around 130 decibels, comparable to the noise levels of a concert, which still is loud but significantly less likely to cause immediate and permanent hearing damage.

While it is true that firearms suppressors do not entirely eliminate the sound of a gunshot, they play a critical role in modulating the extreme noise levels generated by firearms. Supporting the introduction of suppressors helps protect Californians from potential hearing damage and augments our rights to adequate and necessary safety measures at home.
