Update: The Fight to Repeal Florida’s “Free Kill” Law Is at a Critical Crossroads
Thank you to everyone who has signed, shared, and supported this campaign. Because of you, HB 6017 — the bill to repeal Florida’s Free Kill law — passed with overwhelming bipartisan support: 104-6 in the House and 33-4 in the Senate. That alone is historic.
But now we face a new challenge: Governor Ron DeSantis is signaling that he may veto the bill.
He’s echoed the talking points of hospital lobbyists and physician-owned malpractice insurers, claiming that repealing the law would create “jackpot justice” and increase lawsuits — despite no evidence of that in any of the 49 other states that allow these cases.
Let’s be clear:
This isn’t about money. It’s about giving families like mine the right to seek truth and accountability when a loved one dies from preventable medical negligence.
If the Governor vetoes this bill, we will push for an override vote — and we already have the support needed to win it if legislators stand firm.
What you can do now:
Keep sharing this petition
Email Christian.harvey@laspbs.state.fl.us — the analyst assigned to HB 6017 — and urge Governor DeSantis to sign
Contact your local legislators and ask them to support a veto override if needed
This is about protecting the next family from what mine went through. And we are not backing down.
Thank you for standing with us — and with every Florida family still waiting for justice.—Maria Tickner
