Repatriate Lakota War Shirt

The Issue

Origin Gallery and it's partners Davis Brothers Auction and Art Vault LLC have been contacted twice by a new Small Business Ethics Coalition based in Missoula, made up of community members and small business owners, in regard to the Lakota War Shirt they are selling through their gallery. We do not know the provenance beyond the recorded private Sotheby's sales.

The Small Business Ethics Coalition acknowledges that it has never been clearly disclosed as to who the owner of the Lakota War Shirt is, however it is currently being sold through Origin Gallery.

The Small Business Ethics Coalition is asking for the Origin Gallery and it's partners to repatriate, or similarly return, the war shirt to the Lakota tribe or cultural center that handles Lakota cultural patrimony.

Origin Gallery has removed the Lakota War Shirt from the window but there has been no transparency around a plan to repatriate the garment or steps to work with members of the Small Business Ethics Coalition.

Signing this petition will serve as an official continuation of support for the demand letter that has been sent to Origin Gallery and it's partners.

This petition aims solely to demonstrate solidarity, community, and commitment to transparent spaces in Missoula, where Native history is respected and sacred items are treated with the dignity they would have been if the colonial project had not interfered.
