Repair the River Heads Boat Ramp and Pontoon

The issue

The River Heads Boat Ramp and jetty were severely damaged during a storm in December 2022 and remain unrepaired nearly three years later. The missing L-section of the pontoon and exposed timber and metal fittings are now causing damage to boats and creating a real safety risk for the community. The ramp and pontoon continue to deteriorate while both Council and the State Government pass responsibility back and forth.

This facility is one of the most important boating access points in the Fraser Coast region, serving residents, tourists, and emergency services travelling to and from K’gari (Fraser Island). It needs urgent attention so that both land-based fishers and boaties can safely share and enjoy the area.

At present, the site is not only unsafe but also poorly maintained. The damaged pontoon remains unrepaired, with sharp edges and missing protective buffers. There is insufficient parking for boat trailers, which leads to congestion and unsafe manoeuvring on busy days. The absence of security cameras and proper lighting leaves vehicles and property vulnerable to theft and vandalism, particularly during early mornings and evenings.

The area also lacks basic amenities and infrastructure expected at a popular public boat ramp. There is no skip bin near the picnic tables, resulting in frequent litter and rubbish build-up. The existing rock wall is inadequate and offers little protection against wind and wave damage, meaning each major weather event further weakens the structure. Without proper maintenance and planning, this facility will continue to degrade until it becomes unusable.

The River Heads Fishing Club believes the community deserves better. We are calling on the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Queensland Government to prioritise the repair and full restoration of the River Heads Boat Ramp and pontoon, including reinstating the missing L-section. The ramp must be properly maintained to ensure it remains safe, accessible, and functional for all users, including during emergency operations from K’gari. We also ask that upgrades be made to improve parking, install lighting and CCTV for security, provide adequate waste facilities, and strengthen the rock wall to prevent further damage.

This petition is made on behalf of the River Heads Fishing Club, representing our members and the broader Fraser Coast boating and fishing community who rely on a safe, well-maintained ramp to enjoy and protect our waterways.
