Repair school attendance issues

The Issue

As a student who watches peers struggle to maintain grades due to attendance rules, I feel compelled to advocate for a change in school policies. I have personally faced situations where my grades were at risk of dropping solely due to stringent attendance requirements, even though I consistently maintain a high standard of academic performance. This is not just my story; many students I know have perfect grades but face penalties simply because life throws unexpected challenges their way.

Imagine being penalized despite excelling academically, because illness or other unavoidable circumstances prevented you from attending school. This reality affects countless students across our country, like me, who maintain at least a 'B' average in all subjects. We should focus on rewarding students for their academic achievement rather than punishing them over issues often beyond their control.

Forcing students to adhere to strict attendance policies can negatively impact their mental health. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, undue stress and anxiety are significant contributors to poor mental health among students. Schools should serve as supportive environments that foster learning, not additional stress.

The solution? Let’s implore school boards and decision-makers to adjust policies, allowing students with a proven academic track record—at least all B's—to have the flexibility to manage their schooling without the fear of penalties for occasional absenteeism. Flexible attendance policies for high-achieving students will not only recognize their hard work but also promote an encouraging and supportive educational environment.

Join me in urging school districts to take action. Sign this petition to support a change in attendance policy for high-achieving students, allowing them to focus on what truly matters: their education and well-being. Together, we can build a healthier, more balanced approach to education.
