First - the good news. Your voices are definitely being heard and making a difference. And -- the US House has passed the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act, named for my treasured daughters. This is HUGE. But -- the car dealers got a special exemption that means they can continue to rent or loan recalled cars to consumers. That is horrible. So -- unless we get rid of the car dealer amendment, if you rent a car from a rental car company like Enterprise, Hertz, or Avis, you can do so knowing it would be a violation of federal law for them to hand you the keys to a recalled car. The rental car companies themselves support making that the law across the whole country, and we're now a giant step closer to winning that restriction on rental car companies. But -- if you take your car to a new or used car dealership for repairs, it would NOT be a violation of Raechel and Jackie's Act for the dealer to rent or loan you a defective, unsafe, recalled car. Imagine taking your recalled car to the dealer for repairs, and having them provide you with -- another recalled car. YIPES! The Representatives who presented this amendment, and spoke in favor of it, are both -- you guessed it - car dealers. They are Reps. Williams (R-TX) and Kelly (R-PA). Reps. Capps (D-CA) and Schakowsky opposed it, but the vote was taken near midnight, and hardly anyone else was on the House Floor that late, to vote NO. I'm going to continue fighting to oppose the car dealers' loaner car loophole. I hope you'll keep up your phone calls and messages to Rep. Upton. Now the message is: Close the loaner car loophole. Here's what can happen when a dealer hands the keys to an unsafe loaner car to a family. This car wasn't even under a recall at the time, but the crash led to a massive recall. We must stop heartbreaking tragedies like this from happening ever again. Let's win -- with NO loaner car loophole! Cally Houck
