The Issue

In 2024, identity-based centers were closed at Weber State University. This included the Black Cultural Center, Native American Cultural Center, Hispanic & Latino Cultural Center, Pan-Asian Cultural Center, Pasifika Cultural Center, Dream Center for undocumented students or those from mixed-status families, LGBTQ+ Resource Center, and the Women's Center. This was in response to House Bill 261, which directed state public institutions to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. However, closing these centers was unnecessary and Weber State University went a step further than the law's requirement. According to the Standard Examiner, “Weber State is taking a more aggressive approach in removing identity-based names from all cultural centers, Mortensen said. But, the law still allows cultural centers, as long as they are not exclusive.” These centers focused on giving support to their target population and anyone who wished to visit regardless of their identity. The closure of these centers sends the message that people of respective marginalized groups are not welcome at Weber State University. This petition is demanding Weber State University administration to reopen closed identity-based centers.
