The Issue

Tompkins Campground has been a favored place of serenity and recreation for my family and many others in our community. This upcoming season it will be closed due to staffing shortages, leaving a void deeply felt by nature lovers and camping enthusiasts.

With only two Army Corp of Engineers campgrounds in the local vicinity, there has been a significant pressure on availability. Those campsites have been fully booked throughout the entire season, making it nearly impossible for families like ours to continue the time-honored tradition of camping, fishing, water recreation, and exploring.

It's essential to note that campgrounds contribute positively to local economies. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, outdoor recreation generates $887 billion in consumer spending annually and creates 7.6 million jobs in the U.S. (Source: Outdoor Industry Association). Keeping Tompkins Campground closed significantly diminishes these benefits for our community.

We must address the staffing shortages and find a sustainable solution for our beloved Tompkins Campground. This will ensure a myriad of benefits - from providing the community members a chance to reconnect with nature to injecting life into our local economy by attracting tourists.

We urge the responsible authorities to take immediate action. Reopen Tompkins Campground for the community, for nature, and for us.
