Reopen the Street Vendor Commissary in NELA
The Issue
La Comisaria Cooperativa, formerly located at 3210 N Figueroa St., was the only commissary in the Northeast Los Angeles region. Since 2022, more than 150 vendors have been fighting to keep their commissary, and on 9/16/25, the remaining vendors were served with an eviction order. This order puts many of these vendors at risk of losing their jobs and permits, as the commissary is a crucial space for street vendors to legally continue to vend. Although we recognize that this is a bigger fight against gentrification in the area, we urge you to spread awareness and sign this petition to amplify what is happening to not only the street vendor community but also our community as a whole.
In 2022, the vendors associated with La Palma (later renamed L.A. Commissary) received eviction orders that would displace them from their work and community. These vendors, some who had been in the space for more than 20 years, organized against this order to remain within the space. Otherwise, they would have been left to move commissaries -some of which are more expensive or further from the communities they serve and live in- and travel further for their work commute. After months of organizing demonstrations at City Hall, and conversations with city officials, the vendors reached an interim agreement with the assumption that they would be supported to fulfill their goals of gaving a self sustaining and cooperative based commissary.
During these years, the vendors would organize occasional night markets for the community of Cypress, Lincoln, and Highland Park but ultimately were given another court order from the site's property's manager emphasizing the plans for the demolition of the building.
In the aftermath, this resurfaced questions on how to save the space and continue to move forward towards the initial goals of a self-sustained commissary. Soon after, the space was opened to cultural events for the community as a means of raising money for the space as well as to continue to raise awareness around the issues faced by the vendors.
Fast forward to the current political climate, ICE continues to terrorize our communities, many of whom are the vendors faced with the dilemma of continuing to work knowing the risk they are at, or not working at all, with most already at risk of not making rent. Some of the vendors affilated with La Comis felt fears for their customers and themselves alike, as parks and once heavily populated areas of commerce in the area were no longer safe for the community. Most if not everyone's economic situation worsened. Despite this situation, the plans to evict the vendors continued and no adequate support was given to them to combat these urgent situations.
Now that the day has come that the vendors have officially been evicted, many vendors find themselves with no space to station their trucks or carts. As a result many find themselves in the trouble of not being able to legally vend on the streets, further affecting their already difficult struggle of being part of the migrant working class community Los Angeles claims to back up and be uplifted by.
Please help our community by signing this petition to pressure our city officials to provide support for these vendors. Throughout this struggle, these officials claim to have around $50k set aside to open a new commissary as the compromise for these vendors. However, no movement has been made to do so. By signing this petition you will help to show these officials that the people are in support of this new commissary and are aware of the lack of support given to our community in Northeast LA- STOP DISPLACING OUR STREET VENDORS.
