Reopen Sandfort Park Pool for the Benefit of our Community
The Issue
In Phenix City, AL, the closure of Southside Park Pool has borne a heavy toll on our local children and families. While other parks in Phenix City are fortunate enough to have pools still open, those living near Southside Park are faced with a particularly difficult situation. Children are forced to cross a bustling 431 highway, navigating potentially dangerous traffic just to enjoy a swim. This situation presents an avoidable risk and a stark disparity that we must address. 5th St Park is very convenient for families and children that live East of 431 but children that live West of it, are faced with walking across 431 to get to 5th St Park when their parents are at work.
Swimming is not just a summertime activity; it's a vital life skill that can promote physical health and boost mental wellbeing. By reopening the Southside Park Pool, we can provide an opportune space for our children to learn, stay active, and build strong community bonds. In 2017, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlighted the benefits of community swimming pools, stating that they provide an important space for physical activity that is accessible to people of all ages (CDC, 2017).
Our plea is simple but vital. We need our municipal authorities to realize the importance of reopening Southside Park Pool not only for our children's safety but also for the overall wellness of Phenix City's residents. Sign this petition, to begin the conversation of correctly allocating public resources and the safety of our children. Let's work together to reopen Southside Park Pool!
