Reopen Koeberg Nature Reserve

The Issue

Koeberg Nature Reserve has been closed ever since the implementation of Lockdown Level 5 during the Corona pandemic. Recently, the reason for closure has been changed to operational reasons.

We, the undersigned, ask Eskom Chief Mr. Dan Marokane and Chief Nuclear Clive Le Roux for the reopening of Koeberg Nature Reserve. The closure of this vital natural asset has deprived the Melkbosstrand and Duynefontein community and visitors from afar of recreational opportunities, educational programs, and the chance to connect with nature.

Why this matters:

Community Well-being: Koeberg Nature Reserve contributes to the well-being of our community, providing a space for relaxation, physical activity, and nature appreciation.

Biodiversity Conservation: The reserve plays a crucial role in conserving local biodiversity. Closure will stop educational opportunities and a holistic approach to conservation.

Educational Opportunities: The reserve is an invaluable educational resource. Reopening would allow schools and community groups to engage in environmental programs and activities.

Sports and Recreation: Koeberg Nature Reserve has been a destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts, including hikers and cyclists. Reopening will restore access to these activities, promoting a safe, healthy and active lifestyle on the Cape Town West Coast.

Public Access: Access to natural spaces promotes physical and mental well-being. Reopening the Koeberg Nature Reserve is essential for the health of our community.

We ask you to reopen Koeberg Nature Reserve for the benefit of our community, the environment, and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
