Hello everyone!
First of all, we wanted to say thank you for all of the support on the petition! Calvert County Parks and Recreation has assured us that Dunkirk Skatepark will be receiving desperately needed repairs in the coming weeks, primarily to the asphalt, thanks to the community's effort. While the skatepark still needs repairs beyond just a new coat of asphalt sealer, it's certainly a step in the right direction. We are continuing to work with them with the hope of adding a full renovation of Dunkirk Skatepark to the Capital Improvement Plan.
However, there is more that can be done to support the underserved skateboarding community in Southern Maryland. Discussions of a skatepark in Lusby have been ongoing since 2018 and have topped community feedback surveys. With the recent acquisition of Dominion Energy Regional Park, we believe this would be the perfect opportunity for CCPR to revisit this. Currently there are no plans for a new skatepark despite the recent outpouring of community support.
If you support a new skatepark in Lusby, help us let them know! change.org/derpskatepark
Our volunteers are also continuing our efforts for outreach and to grow the skateboarding community in the tri-county area. We recently held another free beginner lesson at Nicolet Skatepark in St Mary's with amazing turnout! We love hosting these free lessons and are excited to start providing them at Dunkirk Skatepark as soon as possible. While we hope to be able to host a lesson before the end of the year, planning is difficult until we know the extent of the closure while repairs take place. But these aren't the only events we'll be hosting! For more information on our upcoming events, our mission, or if you're looking to help out, check out our website!
