The Issue

The news of the Dead Boy Detectives cancellation has left us shattered. Steve Yockey and the crew wanted to tell the story of these two boys and their psychic medium for at-least two seasons. If the cast and crew are ready to fight for a renewal, so are we. Allow us to formally welcome you, to the Save The Dead Boy Detectives agency.

Let us keep a unified front in urging Netflix to undo their cancellation decision or to have our beloved boys be picked up by another streaming service. With the devoted and continuously growing fanbase, any streaming platform that decides to house the two boys can expect a large influx of new subscribers. Make our voices be heard, loud and with love! Please keep it positive! You never know when the good you do may come back around.

Dead Boy Detectives is a supernatural, horror detective television series developed by Steve Yockey, based on the DC Comic Series of the same name. The show follows Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) as they embark on Ghostly Adventures with their psychic friend, Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson).  The series has garnered praise between critics and with a 92% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a renewal was looking imminent.

The Dead Boy Detectives and their brand-new psychic medium are in town. Already a line of fans, forming outside…

It is no surprise that when the variety article dropped on August 30th, 2024 that we were all left devastated. The show resonated with so many of us in various ways, each character having a story arc that connected with fans who had similar experiences. Within the first weeks of its release, fans from the comics and new fans of the show gathered together and very quickly realized that this show would be a part of them forever.

Many people online, especially Tumblr, regarded the show as “The ultimate love letter to tumblr users.” The show even made number one a fair few of times on AO3’s fastest growing fandoms lists! Fandom spaces on Twitter, Tumblr, TikTok, Instagram and other social media sites grew very rapidly and caused a butterfly effect of new people to watch the show.

It is no secret that the themes of the show can go from silly and whimsical one moment, to serious and dark another. Many fans related to the struggles each character faced and talked about how “seen” they felt with how the situations were portrayed. Whether fans resonated with Niko and her shyness and struggle to leave her room, to Charles’ past experience of abuse from his father, to Edwin’s journey to accept his queerness and deal with feelings for his best friend, Crystal’s experience with her toxic ex, Monty’s experience with unrequited love and a toxic mother, and so many more, fans were sure to find a home with a part of the show. The found family that is created within the show is very similar to the found families that fans have outside in the real world and can help people feel connected.

Industry Recognition

The show very quickly gained critical acclaim from review sites like Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently still garners a 92% on its tomatometer, with a current 90% on its average popcornmeter. The average score on IMDB currently rests at a solid 7.5/10 stars, with two of its episodes rated over 8/10 stars.

Dead Boy Detectives has been included in around 30 “Best shows” lists online since its release, and there are dozens of articles praising the show and its vision. Since cancellation, many news outlets have released articles pointing out Netflix’s mistake for choosing to cancel the show.

Diverse Representation

One of the best things about Dead Boy Detectives is the diverse cast and representation within the show. The diversity of the cast is a very appreciated part by many fans, because many people can watch the show and see themselves on the screen. The television industry is very much white washed, and seeing a show like Dead Boy Detectives where 3 of the 4 main cast are not white was a wonderful thing to see.

The fact that the show includes so many LGBTQIA+ characters doesn’t hurt either, given the fact that we have a canonical gay Edwardian ghost, a gay human-crow familiar, a lesbian butcher and sapphic librarian, and a pansexual shape shifting cat king. Yockey mentions how proud he was to have created a show with such extensive queer representation while having the show still be so accessible to a wide audience.

As eternally devoted fans of „Dead Boy Detectives“, we sincerely hope that the show is picked up for a second season and beyond!
