Coach Pete Lopa was more than a youth basketball coach at Whittier Adult School.  As both a NJB and Whittier Thunder coach he was a mentor, a friend, and a family figure to countless students over his almost three-decade tenure. He taught more than just basketball; he imparted invaluable life lessons. Tragically, Coach Pete passed away in August 2023, leaving a grievous gap in our hearts. 

The school's gymnasium was not only a place for sports, but also a platform where Coach Pete nurtured students into accomplished athletes and responsible individuals. In recognition of his immense contribution, his influential teachings, and the unwavering connection he established with his students, it seems only fitting to rename the gymnasium in his honor - A testament to his enduring legacy.

Through the course of his exemplary career, Coach Pete influenced thousands of young athletes. His impact went far beyond the gym. Many of his former students attribute their personal and professional successes to the lessons they acquired under Coach Pete's mentorship.

By renaming the gymnasium after Coach Pete, city of Whittier can broaden the scope of his influence to future generations. Every time a student walks into the gym, they will be reminded of the values he stood for - dedication, respect, sportsmanship, and the importance of never giving up, among others.

This gesture is not only a tribute to a great mentor but also a constant reminder of how one person's commitment and passion can indeed change lives.
