We must rename this bridge.

We are completely heartbroken by the senseless killing of nine African-American people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. This was a terrorist attack by a young white supremacist. In photos that surfaced after the killings, the alleged shooter proudly waved the Confederate Flag. In the wake of the killings, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley bravely called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina State House grounds. She was supported by other republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham and Mitt Romney. Yet when lawmakers in Alabama had the chance to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge earlier this month, they failed to act. They wrongly called the bridge's name a reminder of what we've overcome. The tragedy in South Carolina should show Alabama lawmakers who oppose the renaming of the Edmund Pettus Bridge that glorifying KKK members and Confederate leaders only serves to perpetuate hate and violence. Dylan Roof didn't view the Confederate flag or Confederate monuments as symbols of civil right's movement victories. For him and many others, they serve only as inspiration to spread hate. This is why we need to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
