As a survivor of sexual assault, I am deeply affected by the constant reminder of my traumatic experiences through the presence of a street sign in Hammond, IN. This street is named after Jack Hyles, a man whose legacy and ministries are steeped in abuse. Every time I pass this sign, it acts as a trigger for me and the many others who have suffered at his and his family's hands or under the influence of his ministries 

Jack Hyles was once a prominent figure in our community who used his position as a pastor to exploit and harm vulnerable individuals. His actions have left deep scars on numerous victims over the years. It is estimated that hundreds of people have been affected by his abusive practices (source:  news reports, Let Us Prey).

The current name of this street serves as an honor to this man and his family's legacy - one that is marred with pain and suffering for many residents of Hammond. By renaming this street, we can begin to heal from these traumatic experiences and make our city safer for all its inhabitants.

It's time we stand up against honoring such harmful legacies in our public spaces. Let us rename this street to reflect values that truly represent our community - respect, safety, and justice for all.
