Rename EUPD to Trauma Induced Emotional Dysregulation

The Issue

I am one among many who live with the distress of my condition, known by many professionals as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD). Way too often this label fails to acknowledge the root cause of our struggle: trauma. I've found myself dangerously close to the edge – in a coma twice after suicide attempts – largely due to the dismissiveness and misunderstanding of professionals. My struggle, along with countless others, doesn't garner the understanding and empathy it warrants; not when only the surface of our struggle is scratched. It's not simply present triggers or reactions for our distress, but past traumas that echo in our daily lives. Words matter. Word choice matters. By renaming EUPD to Trauma Induced Emotional Dysregulation, we're highlighting the true cause. In doing so, we would hoep more sufferers could access comprehensive treatments, trauma-related conditions, and shifts perspective in a way that fosters understanding and empathy, rather than dismissiveness and judgement. Let's advocate for this crucial change to bring about phenomenal improvements in the treatment and comprehension of this disorder.

Due to the wording of this diagnosis it was never identified or acknowledged that despite 15 years in and out of psychiatric wards I have never had what I needed the most...trauma therapy. Instead I am repeatedly forced to 'regulate' my emotions but denied the opportunity to process or heal from what originally caused my emotional dysregulation.

Due to the current labelling and therefore misunderstanding of TIED i have so far spent 7 months detained to a psychiatric ward waiting to see if trauma therapy inpatient could be funded only to be told 'No, we don't think an inpatient setting would be appropriate' meaning I will be in the same situation upon discharge as I was 7 months ago but also for the last 15 years!
