The Issue

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the City of South Haven and Mayor Annie Brown officially rename the basketball courts at Elkenburg Park to “Reverend Bobby Walker Courts.”

For 49 years, Reverend Bobby Walker has selflessly organized the Bobby Walker Basketball Tournament, one of the longest-running youth sports traditions in West Michigan. This event not only shaped athletes  it shaped lives. Perhaps I would’ve never had the opportunity to be a successful as a professional basketball player if had not been for Mr Walker!  I went to play College, Professionally Overseas, NBA Summer League and hold the career and single game scoring record for L.C Mohr High School!

Reverend Walker is a pastor, mentor, father figure, and pillar of strength to generations of youth and families across South Haven. As he celebrates 50 years of hosting this historic tournament, we ask the city to recognize his legacy with the renaming of the courts where it all began.

Let’s honor African American history. Let’s honor faith, sportsmanship, and leadership. Let’s honor Reverend Bobby Walker.
