Remove Zip Car Reserved Parking Spaces from Residential West Street, Brooklyn
Remove Zip Car Reserved Parking Spaces from Residential West Street, Brooklyn
The Issue
I am a resident of the beautiful neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, specifically residing on West Street between Avenues T and U. I am writing this petition to address a pressing issue that affects not only me but also numerous residents in our community.
As a car owner living in one of the many residential homes and apartment buildings on West Street, I have experienced firsthand the scarcity of available parking spaces. This problem is further exacerbated by the alternate street cleaning rules enforced twice weekly. It has become increasingly challenging for us to find suitable parking spots for our residential vehicles.
To my dismay, I recently discovered that two reserved parking spaces have been designated exclusively for Zip Car rental car company on our already congested street. While I understand the importance of promoting alternative transportation options and reducing individual car ownership, it should not come at the expense of inconveniencing local residents who rely on their personal vehicles for various reasons.
I believe it is crucial to reconsider these reserved parking spaces allocated to Zip Car and restore them as general public parking areas. By doing so, we can alleviate some of the burden faced by residents who struggle daily to find adequate parking spots near their homes.
Furthermore, let us consider some relevant facts about our neighborhood's current situation:
1) High Density: The area surrounding West Street between Avenues T and U is densely populated with multiple residential apartment buildings and homes. This high density contributes directly to increased demand for available parking spaces.
2) Alternate Street Cleaning Rules: The implementation of alternate street cleaning rules twice weekly further limits available parking options for residents.
3) Shortage of Parking Spaces: Due to limited off-street or private garage options in this area, residents heavily rely on finding street-side parking spots near their residences.
4) Public Transportation: While public transportation options are available in our neighborhood, they may not always be convenient or feasible for residents who require personal vehicles for various reasons such as work, family obligations, or medical needs. Furthermore, we already have NYC subway and bus service within one city block and other car sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft are available so there is no need for Zip Car to be based on West Street.
5) A school and a synagogue are currently being constructed on the same street that will expect dozens of more vehicles to park on West Street, thus requiring many more parking spaces and creating a greater shortage.
Considering these facts and the challenges faced by residents on West Street, it is evident that the current allocation of reserved parking spaces for Zip Car is exacerbating an already critical parking shortage. By removing these designated spaces and returning them to general public use, we can ensure fair access to parking for all residents.
I kindly request your support in signing this petition to urge the relevant authorities to reconsider and remove the two no parking anytime reserved spaces designated for Zip Car on West Street between Avenues T and U. Together, we can make a difference in improving our community's quality of life.
Thank you for your time and support.
Sincerely,
Marie Torgueman
