Remove YouTube's AI Age Verification System

Remove YouTube's AI Age Verification System
The Issue
Starting August 13th, YouTube plans to implement a new AI-driven age verification system. The intention behind this update is to ensure that the platform complies with international regulations and protect minors from inappropriate content. However, while the aim is noble, the means could potentially infringe on user privacy and responsibilities.
AI technology, though advanced, is not infallible. There have been instances where AI-based age detection systems have misclassified users, either flagging them incorrectly or failing to recognize them altogether. This would lead to unjustified accessibility issues for millions of users worldwide trying to access content they are perfectly entitled to view. Moreover, concerns regarding data privacy and the potential misuse of personal information collected during this verification process cannot be ignored.
Youtube's age verification system will flag the videos the user watches and grade them. If the a.i. thinks the videos the user watches are videos made for children, they will bar the user from watching certain videos. This causes the YouTube user to not only be barred from watching their favorite creators, but it also causes the youtuber from getting more views.
Many users are concerned about how AI will make age determination decisions, as this often involves algorithms that could inadvertently discriminate through biased data. Additionally, involving AI at this scale without comprehensive oversight increases the chance of errors due to the technology's interpretation of data.
We propose that YouTube either delays the implementation of this age verification system until it is thoroughly reviewed or works towards an alternative solution that respects user privacy while meeting regulatory needs. Potential alternatives include utilizing non-invasive verification methods, providing parental control tools, or implementing an updated verification process that involves minimal data collection and harnesses user consent without relying solely on AI.
It's imperative that YouTube balance the need to protect young audiences with respecting the privacy and rights of its global user base. However, people could be missed and barred from watching certain videos even if that user is over 18. Therefore, we urge YouTube to reconsider and reevaluate this AI age verification system to avoid unprecedented disruptions and privacy breaches in the user experience.
Sign this petition to ensure that YouTube doesn't implement an age verification system or does so without barring the user from watching videos from creators they like.
This petition isn't just for the user, it's for the youtubers to.
