The Issue

As a content creator on YouTube, I love the platform for its vast reach and the chance it gives us to express ourselves. But recently, there's been something really troublesome—AI moderation. It's beginning to take dark jokes way too seriously, misinterpreting our content, and it's affecting not just me, but hundreds, if not thousands, of creators just like me.

Every day, creators face the nerve-racking uncertainty of making content that might be flagged or removed, not because it's harmful or offensive, but because an AI lacks the context to understand our jokes and artistic expression. These misinterpretations by AI moderation are not trivial—they can lead to demonetization, video removals, and even channel bans. This plight stifles creativity and prevents creators from connecting with audiences who appreciate diverse and edgy content.

Consider this: Thousands of creators around the world rely on YouTube as their primary source of income, a platform that originally promised freedom of artistic expression. With AI at the helm of moderation, our livelihoods are at stake. A joke that a human reviewer might understand is flagged and penalized by AI, pushing creators into survival mode.

Neil Mohan, YouTube's CEO, must take a stand and address this pressing issue. YouTube's AI moderation system needs a fundamental overhaul. We propose a combination of human oversight with AI technology, ensuring creators are better understood and fairly judged. Areas requiring context and nuance should be reviewed by real people who can assess the intended message behind each piece of content.

Additionally cyber criminals get away with blatant harassment while the victims get wrongfully punished for standing up for themselves, I’m speaking from experience because I was defending my friends from someone who makes blatant death threats and I got a strike for defending them, the AI moderation is doing the opposite of what it’s supposed to do!

We all want YouTube to remain a safe and welcoming space, but that shouldn't come at the cost of stifling creativity. Please, stand with us to urge Neal Mohan and YouTube to consider the balance between safety and creative expression by removing the current AI moderation system and investing in a more nuanced approach to content review.
