The Issue

I am speaking up on behalf of students who have experienced racism under the administration of our vice principal, Mrs. Brown. It has become increasingly clear that her actions and decisions have not only perpetuated a discriminatory environment but have also caused harm to students who deserve to learn in a safe and supportive school setting.

A story has come to light by a brave student A.H. a junior In Deptford high school. She recently spoke up about how a student whispered a replacement for the n-word in her ear. A’leeyah did everything we as students are told to do in these situations. She didn’t fight nor yell she went to our administration. She wrote a student statement and had a meeting with our vice, principal Miss Brown to where she was met with our vice principle, saying both the hard R and the N-word.

This is unacceptable. For our vice principal, a supposed “leader” in our school to speak such hateful words is disgusting. And when asked about said words she sad she did not know what it meant. That is more a slap in the face than the fact of which she said it. For her a leader to a school to be uneducated on something so hatful and wrong is just ignorant.

Our school should be a place of inclusivity and fairness, yet under Mrs. Brown's leadership, it has failed to uphold these values. Our school should nurture growth and understanding, where every student, irrespective of their background, feels valued and respected.

We're calling on the school board and district officials to thoroughly investigate these claims and take appropriate action. Removing Mrs. Brown from her position not only sets a precedent for zero tolerance towards racism but also restores trust and safety within the school community.
